Home Environment Form of Pain Centre
Have you been troubled by chronic pain which never seems to leave you no matter what you do? I have and a pretty bad situation too if not for the Asian Pain Centre and the team of dedicated staff.
Since 2005, I have been suffering from chronic pain in my right hip and underwent a hip resurfacing surgery in May 2007. Despite the surgery, I am still experiencing severe pain when I start to or after walking for more than an hour. The reasons were mainly due to inflammation of the muscles & nerves around the hip & my weight problem.
Radiofrequency, Image Intensifier Injection and other methods managed to reduce the pain by about 40%. Dr Yeo advised that it is essential for me to reduce weight. He keeps encouraging me to exercise and to build up my core muscles and always remember to use the right muscles when exercising. Doing exercise is not an issue but the pain was aggravated after each exercise. Soso I have no choice but to stop exercising.
Dr Yeo ever mentioned that he is starting a pain centre that combines both physiotherapy and acupuncture as a complementary approach for treating chronic pain patient like me to ensure that patients are doing exercises in the right way with the right method. The thought of physiotherapy puts me off as my past experiences told me that they only tell you to do certain exercises for 20 times and they’ll move away leaving you alone. Such form of therapy doesn’t help at all and is a waste of time and money. However, Dr Yeo gave a strong assurance that this will not be the case in this pain centre.
The acupuncturist (Dr Ong) will carry out the acupuncture first to relax the muscles as well as relief the pain via the acupoint at the various part of the body. The physiotherapist (Kai Ling) will then guide me the appropriate form of exercise to strengthen the right muscle without aggravating the injured area. One of the key reasons why patients do not show signs of improvement after exercising is the wrong method adopted. The main objective of the Asia Pain Centre is to ensure that patient is doing the exercises the right way without further injuring themselves and to minimise the level the pain to bare minimum. Another objective is to help patient manage the pain whenever it flares up. However, patient’s feedback and co-operation is essential for the treatment to be effective.
'The team at Asia Pain Centre is a very professional and dedicated lot’
Once, I had a very severe flare up and Dr Yeo was having in-camp training, I called Kai Ling and informed her about it and she suggested that I go down immediately during lunch time to see what she can do. She did some form of therapy for me and this has relieved the pain by 80%.
I very much appreciate the commitment Kai Ling puts in her work as well as the other members of the clinic. I have learnt how to manage my pain better and is now more conscious of my posture. This has greatly improved my work performance, more cheerful and my boss is happy for me. It does achieve the mission of the centre “Focusing not only on pain management but also on improving the function and quality of life of the client”.
Besides the team, the wonderful conducive environment of the clinic puts the patient at ease and brighten ones up. You will not feel tense up or frightened as the staff there are very nice and friendly and it’s just like a family.
I will always remember Dr Yeo’s philosophy: “Patient is the Team Captain and is leading the other team members to fight the battle. If the captain gives up, the whole team will loose the battle. Nothing is impossible and never gives up!”
So, keep up the good work 5 musketeers (Juliet, Kai Ling, Dr Ong, Dr Siow & Dr Yeo) and continue to strive for the better. I believe all of you will be able to bring more joy and happiness to other patients like me by helping them & teaching them the right method of managing the pain in order to improve the function & quality of their life.
